Over 1.71 crore workers in the unorganized sector have been registered on the e-shram portal in the last one month since its launch on August 26, 2021.

“One month has been completed for the launch of the e-shram portal with the registration of over 1.71 crore workers in the unorganized sector and unorganized employment,” a statement from the labor ministry said.


As of September 25, 1,71,59,743 workers have registered on the portal, the statement said.

The e-Shram portal was inaugurated by Union Labor and Employment Minister Bhupendra Yadav on August 26, 2021.

The portal is the first national database of unorganized workers including migrant workers, construction workers, gig and platform workers.

It facilitates the workers of the unorganized sector to get the benefits of social sector schemes.

The data shows that the campaign has strengthened with the mobilization of workers achieving a big mile every week. In this first week, 13.55 lakh informal workers registered on the portal.

Enrollment grew exponentially in the third and fourth weeks, with over 19.52 lakh registrations as compared to the second week.

In the fourth week, more than 69.53 lakh workers registered on the e-shram portal, while in the third week it was 68.97 lakh.

Interestingly, till now almost 50 per cent of the registered workers are women. There has been a week-on-week improvement in the percentage of women employees registering themselves on the e-shram portal, the statement said.

The share of women workers increased from about 37 per cent in the first week to about 50 per cent in the latest week i.e. the fourth week.

An analysis of last week’s data showed that a large proportion of women workers in domestic work are registering themselves on the portal.

It is a category of occupation where women outnumber men. Also, women as workers in sectors like agriculture, food industry as assistants and machine operators, garment industry as assistants and tailors and small units of tobacco/bidi rolling and as ASHA/ANM in health industry adequate proportion of the workforce.

Therefore, it would not be wrong to assume that the most vulnerable groups of women are insured under various protection schemes arising out of registration on the portal, the ministry said.

From the first week onwards, Odisha and Bihar have competed with each other to retain the first position, it said.

While Bihar slipped from first to third position, between week third and week four, Odisha successfully topped in registration of unorganized workers on e-shram portal in three out of the total four weeks since the launch of the portal has kept. added this.

The ministry said that the reach of CSCs (Common Service Centres) has steadily improved and their popularity as a method of registration has increased.

While 56.36 per cent registrations were done through CSCs in the first week, more than 78 per cent registrations were done through CSCs in the fourth week. The States/UTs will have to play a vital role in organizing and registering the unorganized sector workers of their respective State/UTs on the e-Shram portal through CSCs.

The e-Shram portal has been linked with Aadhaar and will contain the details of registered workers like name, occupation, address, educational qualification, skill type and family details etc. Thus it will enable them to make the most of their employability potential and enable them to take advantage of government schemes.

Any worker who is working in the unorganized sector and between the age of 16-59 years is eligible to register on the e-shram portal. Migrant workers, gig workers, platform workers, agricultural workers, MGNREGA workers, fishermen, milkmen, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, street vendors, domestic workers, rickshaw pullers and other workers engaged in other similar occupations in the unorganized sector are all eligible.
