The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday gave its approval for the provision of mobile services in untouched villages in 44 aspirational districts of five states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Odisha.

The cabinet approved the use of Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) for provision of mobile connectivity in 7,287 villages across five states at an estimated cost of Rs 6,466 crore.

Briefing the media about the cabinet decisions, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said that these villages in 44 aspirational districts of five states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Odisha will get 4G-based mobile services.

“So, a total of 7,287 villages will get telecom towers and services, and lakhs of people will get connectivity,” Thakur said.

The estimated cost of implementation of Rs 6,466 crore includes operating expenses for five years.

The project will be funded by the USOF, and will be completed within 18 months of the signing of the agreement, an official release said.

The work relating to provision of 4G mobile services in unidentified villages will be awarded through an open competitive bidding process as per the existing USOF procedures.

“The current proposal for provision of mobile services in remote and difficult-to-understand areas of aspirational districts in the five states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Odisha will enhance digital connectivity useful for self-reliance, facilitating learning, dissemination of information and knowledge. , skill up-gradation and development, disaster management, e-governance initiatives…,” the release said.

The move will also enable provision of adequate support to enterprises and educational institutions for setting up of e-commerce facilities, knowledge sharing and availability of job opportunities while fulfilling the vision of Digital India.
