Congress in discussions on alliance with NCP, MGP and GFP for Goa 2022

The Congress is in talks for a possible alliance with the NCP, the Goa Forward Party (GFP) and the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) for the Goa Assembly elections to be held early next year.

AICC Goa desk in-charge Dinesh Gundu Rao told reporters that all these parties are of the view that Goa needs to get rid of the “corrupt and communal” government led by the BJP.

“The main objective of this alliance, if it is realized, would be to provide a stable government in Goa for five years,” he said.

Goa will go to polls in February next year.

The GFP and the MGP have been part of the BJP-led government for some time in the last five years.

Outlining the Congress’ strategy for the elections, Rao said his party is ready to forge alliances with those who understand Goa, are of the soil and understand the culture and community of Goa.

In the 2017 Goa Legislative Assembly elections, the Congress won the highest number of 17 seats in the 40-member house, narrowing the BJP to 13. However, the BJP allied with regional parties to form a coalition government under the late Manohar Parrikar.

In the last five years, the Congress lost 13 MLAs from opposition parties, mostly the BJP. Senior Congress leader and MLA Luizinho Faleiro recently joined TMC.
