Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have received record pre-placement offers (PPOs) for the class of 2022, as recruiters seek to tap engineering talent amid an unprecedented surge in demand.

The companies that have made offers include Amazon, Flipkart, Qualcomm, Microsoft, Dee Shaw, Adobe, Google, American Express, Cisco, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Oracle and Standard Chartered, officials said.

PPOs are given to the students on the basis of performance in the internship. Many recruiters are moving towards hiring through this route as it gives them a longer opportunity to assess the candidates before making a job offer.

IIT Roorkee has got 214 PPOs, which is 39 per cent more than last year’s 154 PPOs. Out of these, students accepted 179 PPOs this year as compared to 137 last year.

Consultant (Training and Placement) CS Shankar Ram said the institute got 227 PPOs this year as against 186 last year.

IIT Kanpur and IIT Guwahati have got the highest PPO of Rs 64 lakh per annum this year.

At IIT Guwahati, the number of PPOs has increased from 133 last year to 171 this year, according to Abhishek Kumar, head of its Career Development Centre.

IIT Kanpur jumped 37 per cent year-on-year in PPOs to 207 from 151 last year.

“This rush is due to the increase in recruitment requirements of large tech firms. As more startups are going for IPO (initial public offering), they are also looking at expansion,” said a student representative in the placement cell of IIT Kanpur.

In the smaller IIT Mandi, students accepted 49 PPOs this year, which is 10 more than last year.

Tushar Jain, Consultant, Career and Placement Cell, IIT Mandi said, “Due to the pandemic there has been an increase in the number of recruiters participating in our internship drives along with online drives.”

IIT Jodhpur, another relatively young institute, got 34 PPOs this year, which is 55% more than the 22 approved last year, said Anuj Pal Kapoor, its faculty in-charge, career development cell.
