IITs get record pre-placement offers for Class of 2022

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have received record pre-placement offers (PPOs) for the class of 2022, as recruiters seek to tap engineering talent amid an unprecedented surge in demand.
Placement officials of these institutes said the IITs of Chennai, Kanpur, Roorkee, Guwahati, Mandi and Jodhpur grew by 22-55% on a yearly basis, before the final placement season for the old IITs begins next month. ,

The companies that have made offers include Amazon, Flipkart, Qualcomm, Microsoft, Dee Shaw, Adobe, Google, American Express, Cisco, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Oracle and Standard Chartered, officials said.

PPOs are given to the students on the basis of performance in the internship. Many recruiters are moving towards hiring through this route as it gives them a longer opportunity to assess the candidates before making a job offer.
Harshvendra Soin, Global Chief People Officer, Tech Mahindra, said, “Hiring through a PPO provides an opportunity for both the parties, the candidate and the company to assess each other for long-term commitment.” “We have increased our hiring from leading IITs and other engineering colleges by offering PPOs.”

IIT Roorkee has got 214 PPOs, which is 39 per cent more than last year’s 154 PPOs. Out of these, students accepted 179 PPOs this year as compared to 137 last year.

Vinay Sharma, Professor said, “The pandemic has brought some directional changes in the placement landscape, with companies related to AI, software, networks, analytics etc being aggressive in hiring as compared to manufacturing, infrastructure or core sector at large Huh.” In charge of Placement and Internship at IIT Roorkee.

With the accelerating digital transformation due to the pandemic, the demand for technical talent has seen a surge, which has further escalated to higher levels. Campus hiring has assumed even greater importance to break out of the talent crunch, as companies seek to hire freshers and train them in new-age techniques.

At IIT Madras, the top pre-placement offer this year is Rs 46.5 lakh per annum, up 29% from last year’s Rs 35.98 lakh. The average PPO package has increased from Rs 18.9 lakh last year to Rs 23 lakh.

IIT Kanpur and IIT Guwahati have got the highest PPO of Rs 64 lakh per annum this year.

At IIT Guwahati, the number of PPOs has increased from 133 last year to 171 this year, according to Abhishek Kumar, head of its Career Development Centre.

IIT Kanpur jumped 37 per cent year-on-year in PPOs to 207 from 151 last year.

“This rush is due to the increase in recruitment requirements of large tech firms. As more startups are going for IPO (initial public offering), they are also looking at expansion,” said a student representative in the placement cell of IIT Kanpur.

In the smaller IIT Mandi, students accepted 49 PPOs this year, which is 10 more than last year.

Tushar Jain, Consultant, Career and Placement Cell, IIT Mandi said, “Due to the pandemic there has been an increase in the number of recruiters participating in our internship drives along with online drives.”
