After abolishing physical classes in colleges and educational institutions of big states like UP, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Delhi and other states, the Odisha government is also pushing to end offline classes in the state. Keeping in view the rising COVID-19 cases across the country, the Odisha government announced the closure of colleges and universities with effect from January 10, 2022. The official order received by the Special Relief Commissioner said, “All Universities, Colleges and Technical Educational Institutions (except Medical Colleges, Nursing Colleges and Institutions under the jurisdiction of the Department of Health and Family Welfare) under the supervision of the Government of Odisha) are offline. Classes will be closed from 10th January 2022.

The order further states that the authorities of all colleges, universities and technical educational institutions shall switch back to online learning mode to keep the learning process in motion. It was also mentioned that all the hostels of such educational institutions would also remain closed from January 10, 2022. In the order, the hostel students have been advised to avoid staying in the hostel to avoid COVID infection. However, scholars, researchers and those students residing in hostels for project work, research work and other academic activities are exempted from this condition. All the ongoing offline examinations in the state have been directed to continue in physical mode following the COVID-appropriate behaviour.Apart from this, coaching institutes and organizations have also been directed to switch to online mode to continue teaching. Notably, Odisha recorded 2,703 fresh Covid-19 cases on January 6, 2022, while Maharashtra topped the list. At present, India’s active caseload stands at 3, 71, 363, according to the health ministry.
