The Uttar Pradesh government on January 7, 2022 renamed a Sainik School in Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh after the late General Bipin Rawat, India’s first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), as an honorary tribute. Notably, CDS General Bipin Rawat had passed away in December 2021 after a helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) of Uttar Pradesh informed that the renaming of Sainik School located in Mainpuri is an initiative of UP CM Yogi. Adityanath, to pay tribute to General Bipin Rawat, who gave up his life by serving the nation. Thus, the school will now be known by its new name “General Bipin Rawat Sainik School”.
Mainpuri-based Sainik School became operational on 1st April, 2019 and is one of 33 such educational institutions in the country, of which three are located in Uttar Pradesh itself. The other two Sainik Schools of UP are located in Jhansi and Amethi respectively. There is another Sainik School in Lucknow which is run by UP Sainik School Society, while others come under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Defense in UP. The country’s current CDS General Bipin Rawat was among the 13 other dead passengers who were on board the ship during the chopper crash. The copter accident took place on December 8, 2021 in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. General Rawat was accompanied by his wife Madhulika Rawat, who also died in the accident.
It is noteworthy that the Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain, Captain Varun Singh survived the accident but later died during treatment at a hospital in Bengaluru on December 15, 2021.
