Section 144 of CrPC in view of tension in some parts of Maharashtra

The Pune district administration on Sunday imposed Section 144 CrPC in the wake of recent stone-pelting in parts of Maharashtra following protests on Friday against the violence in Tripura in late October.

An official said the order, issued by Collector Rajesh Deshmukh, prohibits people from circulating messages and posts on social media platforms, which can create communal rift between groups, as well as hold meetings etc.

“It shall be in force from the midnight of November 14 till November 20. As per the order, spreading of messages etc. through social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp, which may create communal rift in the society, is prohibited. Five or Assembly or gathering of large number of people, hoardings and posters, which can create communal tension, are prohibited,” he said.

The official said that violators will be prosecuted under section 188 of the IPC.
